Designed for right handed pedal operation.

To install the hand controls, simply screw the gas and brake pedal clamps (these are at the bottom of the hand controls) onto the pedals.  No tools are required, you simply use your fingers to tighten the bolt screws.  The bolt screws as provided in the kit, along with everything needed for driving using only your hands.  Time taken for installation can be as little as two minutes.  First time installation takes around 30 minutes, as the installer will need to assess the perfect length adjustment – which takes trial and error.

Once the pedal clamps have been tightly secured to both the gas and brake pedals, you loop the steering wheel mount strap over the steering wheel mount and fasten it to the hand controls.  The strap holds the hand controls in position just below the steering wheel – this allows close proximity to the turn signals as well as allowing drivers with large hands to both control the hand controls with the palm of the hands while using the fingers to help operate the steering wheel.

For optimal positioning we recommend adjusting the length of the hand controls (which are adjusted in a similar fashion to length adjustable crutches) so the length reaches up to directly underneath your steering wheel.  However, some drivers prefer free standing hand controls that rest on their laps so installation of the steering wheel mount strap is optional.

Portable Freedom Staff Hand Control

A picture of the BMTech Push Pull Hand Controls installed in a car. Notice the steering wheel mount strap and pedal clamps for optimal installation. In this picture the hand controls are positioned quite low down – however the strap is length adjustable allowing for positioning closer to the steering wheel.

An instructional manual with precise instructions is provided and should be followed exactly.

Operate the hand controls via a push/pull mechanism to accelerate/brake.  This device is designed primarily for drivers who cannot drive with both their legs.  Driving experience is comparable to other permanently installed hand controls which require manual hand strength.  For inexperienced drivers we recommend several days of safe/light driving before driving in busy areas.

Many people email us worried about whether it can be installed on their specific vehicle type.  All vehicles with the regular pedal configuration are suitable.  The hand controls rods are also length adjustable meaning almost all vehicle sizes are suitable.  The steering mount strap can be adjusted and raised/lowered depending on the driver’s leg room and comfortability.

Firstly, the BMTech Push Pull Hand Controls handle is one long attached bar, instead of being completely separated (as in the BMTech Quick Fit Hand Controls) or having a brake hand control handle and a thumb accelerator (as in the BMTech Gas Thumb and Gas Thumb PRO Hand Controls).

Thirdly, unlike the BMTech Quick Fit Hand Controls this is length adjustable allowing the perfect ‘sweet spot’ length based on the driver’s size and personal preferences. – it’s also collapsable allowing for it to be folded up and easily transported.

Firstly although it was designed in the USA it’s manufactured in China (our other hand controls are made in the USA) which some people do not like.  In terms of build quality it is certainly lighter and feels less strong than all our other BMTech Hand Controls.  It will never break from being used for driving, however compared to our other welded USA-made BMTech Hand Controls it certainly is not as strong.

We currently ship our portable hand controls across the US, Canada and Mexico.  For sales to Europe please visit our UK hand controls website.  Free shipping is offered within the US, shipping to Canada and Mexico is charged at the time being at a $55 flat rate.

It’s a pretty good set of PHCs. Sometimes after a few hours of use my hands can get pretty tired but usually it’s fine.

I bought the Freedom Staff Kit after having MPS hand controls for over 6 years. I was switching to a different truck and wanted to be able to share driving it with my children. The great thing about these portable hand controls is that I can take em out and install em in just a few minutes. I don’t need to pay anyone to install it… I can do it all myself!

I sent you an emailing regarding this issue. You live in Hyderabad in Pakistan so it’s going to take longer than the usual few days to reach you. Sorry that it took so long for you, I’ll endeavour to be clearer about deliveries to difficult to reach parts of the world in the future.

I’ve had many sets of portable and permanent hand controls over the years… Mobility Products and Design and Guido to name just a few… they’re all different and all have good and bad bits but the FS PHCs are cheap, delivered fast and don’t require any mechanic drilling holes into my vehicle – and they work just as well. Satisfied.

My favourite thing about the fs kit is they fold up and can be put into this little blue bag… they end up taking almost no space at all – it’s perfect for use on rental cars because you can just put em on and take em off. I’m imagining going on holiday.. renting a car in Europe and going on a road trip adventure.

I would love to see a picture of this model on a car.How does this work?

    • :

      Hi Shari,

The rods are length adjustable, so one of the first things to do is to test for the perfect length so that the ‘hand controls’ part of the kit is placed below the steering wheel, within easy reach. Once the rods are at the correct length (you can change them later on of course) you then attach the pedal clamps to the pedals, making sure they’re securely fastened. From there you attach the hand controls strap round the steering wheel mount so that the hand controls lie below the steering wheel, supported completely by the straps. Please make sure to read the instruction manual that comes with it for full details!

Once installed people with larger hands will find that, if installed correctly, they can actually use one hand on the steering wheel and one hand on both the hand control’s handle and the steering wheel. For people with smaller hands this most likely won’t be possible.

Operating the system, especially if you’re not familiar with hand controls or haven’t driven in a long time requires a little practise to get used to things first.

      Hope this helps,

      Jonny

    :

Do they have to be under steering wheel? I have permanent ones in my car now, that break and gas are one on the left side of steering wheel. Are these or any type you sell have the ability to be on side of wheel Any info appreciated. LOLLIE25002@Yahoo.com Three stars from what have read

    • :

Hi Lori, you don’t actually need to attach the steering wheel mount strap – however yes, they do need to be somewhere under the steering wheel and not to the side. Unfortunately no portable hand controls feature the handles next to the steering wheel.

Happy to receive quickly but disappointed to find it was made in
China and the manual describing unit and installation was poorly written and confusing but using common sense it installed easily and works very well.

    :

Works very well BUT I should have bought the Dyno hand controls because switching between the brake and gas handles for the FS hand controls is a bit annoying…. having one handle to put your hand on would be much better and simpler.

Question — Have recently lost the feeling in my legs, do not want to lose my independence. I believe I have need of your product. Does the state of ariz. require a special lic.??
    thanx. A senior still verticle.

      Hi Gil,

We can sell our hand control kits to anybody, but whether they can be legally installed depends on a local level. The law and its implementation varies widely on a state and city-wide basis. If you do decide to purchase our hand controls, it’s important to make sure you’re driving legally.

There are some people who when faced with the huge financial, time and legal restraints simply choose our hand controls and forget about the legality of their situation. We do not recommend or endorse this position!

      Thanks,

      Jonny

I am very interested in this product and would like to private message you Johnny.

    • :

      Hi David,

Yes I’m quite sure it will install into your vehicle. Maybe some very large or oddly shaped vehicles have problems with installation… but with regular cars and almost all trucks the success rate is around 95%. Either way we offer our installation guarantee so if it doesn’t install properly we can accept it as a return.

      http://handicaphandcontrols.com/frequently-asked-questions/installation-guarantee

And yes, you can install it yourself. You require no tools aside from your hands and no permanent modifications are made to the vehicle. Each set of hand controls we sell arrives with an instruction manual.

You can learn more about it here http://handicaphandcontrols.com/product/hhc-fs-hand-controls

You may also be interested in our Dyno hand controls. They’re more expensive but the one handed handle aspect is very appealing to people.

      Thanks,

      Jonny

Id like to know if it will be used by left hand or right hand. Thanks

    • :

      Hi Karyna,

The FS hand controls are designed to be used with the right hand only.

      Thanks,

      Jonny

Better than claw handles because they are connected together (I return the claw hand controls). Install not so easy… but practise makes you faster (now is ok… my son help me). Steering knob that come with it not so good… too cheap look like it damage the wheel (jaggid metal). I buy the expensive knob much better quality.

This is such a great product. I have owned this since dec of 2014, the only thing I’ve had to do is make a bracket to hold the hand controls in one place. Other then that, these things are great and i trust them with my life.
